After Hours Court House Experience - November 10, 1997

An important part of understanding how our country works is being aware of the role and function of the judicial system. We have arranged a visit to the Criminal Courts for our area. Located at 141 Clarence Street in Brampton, these are amongst the busiest court rooms in Ontario. During our time in the court rooms we will be introduced to the various jobs in the court itself and the roles of the people there. We are hoping to have "back stage tour" of the passage ways where Judges and prisoners pass every day. All Scouts attending this event must meet in the parking lot on the south side of the Court House absolutely no later than 6:55 PM. Once we are inside the building the doors will be locked and no one else will be admitted. NOTE: The courts are not in session and there will be no one else in the building during this time.

Please return the permission form to our next meeting on November 3. There is no fee for this event.

Rock Climbing - November 3, 1997

The current unavailability of the school gym gives us a great opportunity to spend an evening just "hangin round" on the walls at the Summit Rock Climbing Gym. This facility provides a fun but safe place for Scouts of all sizes and ages to try everything from bouldering (moving sideways at a low level without a rope) to climbing the beginners box and moving all the way to climbing upside-down in "the cave". For those who have not been here before, a lesson is provided as is the climbing harness and helmet. Please note, the main purpose of a rock climbing helmet is to protect the climber from falling rock; weve never seen any falling rock inside the gym. At your discretion you may sign off on the "helmet waiver", otherwise the Scout must wear the helmet.

To make this a great experience for everyone we can use as many adults as possible. Each climber must work with a "belayer" over the age of 13 who assists by manning the climbers safety rope. It is the belayers job to pull in the slack while the climber is going up; the belayer does not pull the climber up the wall. The belayer then feeds line to the climber and controls the descent using a device called a grigri - a friction operated braking system. The belayer does not require super human strength for either the ascent or the descent, but is an important part of the climb and requires paying the appropriate attention to the climber rather than the surroundings - hence, over the age of 13. The more adults we have on-site, the more climbs each Scout will get that evening. For those who have not belayed before, the staff at Summit provides a lesson. If youve done it before but are a little rusty, the gym staff will give you a refresher.

Because of the time lines this opportunity also gives us some unique challenges. The operators are making a special opening in their schedule for us. To this end, it is imperative that everyone help us in the following way:

1) No later than Friday October 31 ALL SCOUTS must notify Scouter Gary whether or not they are attending so that the numbers can be passed onto the gym ahead of time. If you are coming with us, when you call let us know if you have an adult (or two or three) or older brother/sister coming to help belay.

2) Complete the attached waivers AHEAD OF TIME (really important!!!) and bring them to Summit with $12.00 CASH in hand to pay the gym for our special Group Rate.

3) Be at the Summit Rock Climbing Gym, 1224 Dundas St E., Unit 12 (south side between Tomken and Dixie, located right beside LaserQuest) absolutely no later than 6:25 PM on Monday November 3rd, forms completed, cash in hand and READY TO HAVE FUN! We must get started right on time to take advantage of this opportunity. Persons who are late might not be accommodated.

Popcorn Orders Are Due Now

Bring your completed popcorn order form to the Summit Rock Climbing Gym on Monday November 3rd. If you are not attending, please call Scouter Dave to make arrangements to drop off your order before our meeting on November 3rd. We must return all orders to the popcorn co-ordinator now.
