October 6, 1997 - Mississauga City Hall Tour

Learning about the role of government and their own responsibilities as citizens is part of the Scout Program. On Monday October 6, 1997 at 6:30PM the Troop will meet in the lobby of Mississauga City Hall for a tour and an opportunity to meet with a government official to learn more about their rights and responsibilities. Please complete and return the attached Permission Form to our next meeting on Monday September 29.

October 13, 1997 - Thanksgiving

No meeting on this date.

October 17 - 18, 1997 - Apple Day / Conservation Day Hike

The annual Apple Day event is very important for all members of Scouting. On this one day Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders take a highly visible position in their community to promote Scouting for youth in our community. The members of the Scout Troop will meet at 6:30 on Friday evening at the Sunkist Market Place (near Michaelangelo's) for a few hours to represent Scouting in Mississauga at a number of local shopping centres.

The Scouts will then again gather on early Saturday morning with the Beavers and Cubs to participate in Apple Day. After a few hours the Troop will hike off (with day packs) to Erindale Park for games, lunch and a few Conservation activities. By the end of the day all will have completed one of their three 8 kilometre hikes for the Bronze Explorer Badge. The pickup point is will be at Wellesborough Place (see enclosed map). Permission form must be returned at the September 29th meeting. The activity fee for this event is $5.00 to cover food and supplies.

October 20, 1997 - Lakeview Generating Station Tour

All Scouts are to be dropped off at the Security Gate on Hydro road absolutely no later than 6:30 PM. Tours are not available to the public at this time of day but special arrangements have been made for us and we will not keep our host waiting. Pickup will be at the same location at 8:30 PM. Please complete and return the attached Permission Form to our September 29th meeting. See enclosed map for location.

General Information About Camp Fees

In the past the Troop has made extensive use of the Goodyear Memorial Scout Camp near Orangeville. As part of your registration fee in the past, $15.00 per person was paid directly into a camp fund to Mississauga Region which allowed to us camp for free as often as we wished. Effective September 1, 1997 the organization of Scouting Districts and Regions in Ontario was significantly altered. Although very few of the changes will have direct impact on our youth members, one important change was the reduction in the annual registration fee as the camp portion was eliminated. However, the camp is now operated on a user-pay basis. As a result, the fee that we must charge for each camp will increase this year. On a positive note, since we will now pay for the use of a site wherever we camp, we will make a greater effort to experience a number of different Scout Camps in Southern Ontario.

October 3 - 5, 1997 - Fall Camp

Our first camp of the year will be held at Camp Nemo. This Scouts Canada property is located in the Burlington area just off the Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail. The weekend will allow the patrols to learn and practice camp skills. The Troop will meet at Sawmill Valley School on Friday evening at 6:30 PM and will be returned directly to their home between 2:00 and 3:00 on Sunday.

Through a combination of factors we find ourselves pressed for adult leadership on this weekend. If you can assist us by staying one (or both nights), or even during the day, we will be able to operate this camp for as many youth as possible. Please contact Scouter Dave to discuss how you can help.

Please complete and return the attached Permission Form to our September 29th meeting. The fee for this camp is $30.00. A map to the camp is enclosed.

October 24 - 26, 1997 - Mississauga Areas Fall Camporee

The first full Mississauga Areas event for Scout Troops this year will take place on the weekend of Friday October 24 to Sunday October 26, 1997. The main aim of the weekend is to have fun and take part in a series of events while practicing some Scouting expertise and learning new skills.

For this camp we must meet at Sawmill Valley School at 6:00 PM on Friday evening. Travel time to camp is approximately one hour. From the parking lot the Scouts must hike in all gear and pitch their campsite on before retiring for the night. Scouts will be returned directly home by the drivers between 2:00 and 3:00 PM on Sunday. Please complete and return the attached Permission Form to our September 29th meeting. A map to Camp Goodyear is attached. The fee for this camp is $30.00.

Help Us Keep You Informed

Newsletters are normally handed out at regular meetings. Some newsletters contain information that must get to a Scout who missed a meeting and sometimes we need to send out information before the next meeting. For instance, the newsletter that was distributed a couple of weeks ago (before our first meeting) was handled by one of our leaders driving or cycling around. Given that our members live in an area from Winston Churchill Blvd to Terry Fox Drive, north of Eglinton and south of the QEW, this can be a very time consuming and expensive task.

Help us to speed the delivery of information in unusual circumstances. If you have a fax and/or e-mail, please complete and return the attached form providing the requested information. We will use these alternate means of delivery when the normal channels are not available. Also, if you have access to the World Wide Web on the Internet, our newsletters (with all references to personal information deleted) are posted on our web site at "www.geocities.com/Yosemite/2195".
